Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly planning to sign Brazil winger Douglas Costa this summer.
The 27-year-old forward joined Bayern Munich from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2015, but seemed to be surplus to requirement in his second season at the Allianz Arena under head coach Jupp Heynckes.
Having spent just once season at the Bundesliga side, Costa was sent on season long loan to Italian Serie A side, Juventus, after making 23 appearances in the 2016-17 season – compared to his 27 appearances in his first season at the club.
Meanwhile, United manager is said to have informed the club’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, to go after the £40 million worth player once the season wraps up in May.
According to Mirror, Costa had rejected offers to join the Red Devils under the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson while he was still playing for Gremio in his country.
He however has been impressive for the Old Lady since he joined them last summer, and a deal to the EPL side could be the result of his hard work in the Italian topflight.
Costa was also part of the team that stunned Tottenham Hotspur at the Wembley Stadium earlier this month to help his side reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League championship.
Though, Juventus have an option to make the Bayern Munich player a permanent deal, but United are brewing with confidence they will end up securing his signature owing to the sufficient encouragement their representatives have got over the deal.
After signing Sanchez in January, Mourinho reportedly said he won’t be buying an attacking player this summer, but the underperformance of the Chilean after his first three months at the club is more than worrisome.
And the former Real Madrid handler will be forced to either look for a replacement for the Premier League highest paid player, who has scored just one goal in over six matches for his club, despite his whooping £500,000-a-week wages he earns.
However, the future of Anthony Martial and Juan Mata at Old Trafford are in doubt, as they are part of the players Mourinho might be selling come this summer.
The former Chelsea coach won an Europa League title and a domestic league cup in his first year at United, but might end his second season without a silverware, except if he wins the English FA Cup later this season
