the official Lewandowski offered himself to Real Madrid before Barcelona move

An interesting take from Spanish publication Relevo has claimed that when Robert Lewandowski decided to leave Bayern Munich last summer, he offered himself to Real Madrid and, in fact, preferred to move to the Spanish capital club instead of Barcelona.

Lewandowski, 34, has been an excellent signing for Barcelona this season, scoring 19 goals across all competitions.  The story, however, could have been entirely different only if Madrid president Florentino Perez had decided to launch an offer for the Pole

The aforementioned outlet claims that Lewandowski started exploring his options after a reported falling out with the Bayern Munich board.  Although his contract with the Germans was valid until 2024, he decided to leave in 2022 itself.

And as he communicated the same with his agent Pini Zahavi, the Israeli began to contact the teams across the continent.  As it turns out, the first-ever call went to Real Madrid as the forward preferred to don the royal white.

And since Spain was the only country he and his wife preferred, he thought Real Madrid would be the right move for him as the team had taken interest in him in the past.

Interestingly enough, Real Madrid decided not to sign Lewandowski since he is already on the wrong side of 30 and a certain Karim Benzema was in the form of his life.

Slotting both centre-forwards into the same team would have been extremely difficult for the team.  Add to it his high wage demands mean Madrid would have to bid their hopes of signing Kylian Mbappe goodbye.

And once the Madrid team was out of the picture, Barcelona decided to pounce on the opportunity despite evident interest from PSG.  Ultimately, a fee worth €45 million, potentially rising to €50 million with add-ons was enough to bring him to Spotify Camp Nou, where he has proven to be a stunning addition.
